Temporary residence permit (TRP)

A TRP is issued to a foreigner lawfully in Kazakhstan who has grounds to stay beyond the visa or visa-free period: employment with a Kazakhstan employer, study, medical treatment, family reunification, business immigration. The application is filed by the host party — usually the employer — with the migration service at the place of residence. For a residence-permit applicant without exemptions, the TRP is the first year in a settlement region.

Grounds and host party

We establish what gives the right to stay: an employment contract with a Kazakhstan employer (AIFC participants need no labour permit), study, treatment, marriage or kinship with a citizen, business-immigrant status.

Lawful stay and registration

A valid visa of the right category or visa-free period, an arrival notification from the host with a purpose matching the grounds, IIN and fingerprinting.

Passport with sufficient validity, the host's application, the grounds document (contract, study certificate, marriage certificate), a housing document with address and RKA code, photo, fee receipt.

Filing and decision

The host files with the migration service at the residence address. The TRP is issued for the term of the grounds and tied to the address: moving means a new notification, a new employer means a new TRP.

Next — residence permit

One year of lawful residence and 12 months of continuous work or business in a settlement region — the condition for a residence-permit application under the 2026 pilot without exemptions.

Questions and answers

Can I get a TRP myself, without an employer?

The application is always filed by the host party — where you live or work. An individual (spouse, relative, homeowner) can also act as host on family grounds.

What if I change my address?

The host files a new arrival notification; the TRP is tied to the address and grounds, so a change of employer or region means a new application.

Is a TRP needed for a residence permit?

Without an exemption — yes: the 2026 pilot requires a year of lawful residence in a settlement region, and a TRP via an employer with a C3 visa or business-immigrant status is the usual way to spend that year.
